National Apprenticeships Week 2018: Employer Events

This year’s National Apprenticeship Week (#NAW2018) ran from 5th to 9th March. Now in its 11th year, the theme of 2018’s week-long celebration highlighted how Apprenticeships Work for individuals, employers, local communities and the wider economy.

Employers in Liverpool City Region who wanted to find out more about Apprenticeships were spoilt for choice during Apprenticeship Week – there was a rich choice of events and activities on offer, providing ample information to businesses wanting to develop staff through Apprenticeships. Here’s a run-down of what was on offer:

Employer Breakfast Briefings

The LCR Apprenticeships Hub held four employer breakfast briefings in association with the region’s Chambers of Commerce. The sessions were packed with essential information about Apprenticeships including a breakdown of features and benefits, funding information with an overview of the Apprenticeship Levy, and opportunities to hear perspectives from apprentices and apprentice employers.

Alder Hey Children’s Foundation Trust

The world famous Alder Hey hospital focussed on educating its 3300 strong workforce about Apprenticeships during the week, with an exhibition style information event in their main atrium. Visiting children and their parents also visited the various stands. The Apprenticeship Hub team were on hand during the week to provide advice.

Aintree Hospital

From April 2018, large employers can transfer up to 10% of their Apprenticeship Levy to other employers. Aintree Hospital held an event on 7th March at Goodison Park Stadium for third sector organisations, charities, social partnerships and small care providers to discuss the opportunities this initiative presents.

Wirral Hospital 5th – 9th March

Wirral NHS Trust ran a whole series of events throughout Apprenticeship Week including:

  • careers fair with Wirral Community Trust and Scouts/Guides, focussing on clinical and non-clinical opportunities in the health sector
  • Apprenticeships information, advice and guidance event on Monday targeting internal staff
  • Train the Trainer event on Tuesday hosted by Wirral University Teaching Hospital and delivered by Cheshire Career Hub, providing Wirral teachers and careers officers with the latest information on Apprenticeships so they are fully equipped to advise individuals
  • The Trust’s Apprenticeship Team hosted 3 one-hour drop-in sessions on Wednesday highlighting exciting new Apprenticeship opportunities for staff in conjunction with Edge Hill & Chester University, Training Strategies Ltd and Wirral Metropolitan College
  • Apprenticeship Mastermind saw Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Wirral Communitiy Partnership Trust and Countess of Chester Hospital compete in a Health/Apprenticeships quiz on Thursday


LJMU Leadership & Management Apprenticeship Event 7th March
This event presented a chance for employers to find out how Degree Apprenticeships can help in the recruitment and development of highly skilled staff.

Progress to Excellence delivered a free webinar for employers to find out how Apprenticeships can work for businesses.

held a networking event for employers to find out how Apprenticeships can help business grow.

Greater Merseyside Learning Providers Federation (GMLPF)
GMLPF held a series of events to support Apprenticeship providers during Apprenticeships Week. This included the launch of the Apprenticeships & Mental Health working group, where training providers explored Apprenticeships as a potential context for tackling mental health in young people. The Maths & English in Apprenticeships Forum also launched during Apprenticeships Week, looking at helping providers increase attainment levels.

Apprenticeships: A Solution to Tackling the UK’s LGV driver shortage
St Helens-based TRS Training Ltd in partnership with The Road Haulage Association launched their Apprenticeships Information Tour during Apprenticeship Week, speaking to employers across the country about using Apprenticeships as a vehicle for addressing the UK shortage in LGV Drivers #10kTalks

Mode Training 
Apprenticeships provider Mode launched the Made@Mode initiative detailing businesses and students who have achieved success through Apprenticeships at Mode #WorksForMe
